There has been a great deal of romantic speculation about the “Pathétique“ since its premiere in 1893, and the composer’s sudden death only nine days later. Most of this is easily de-bunked by historic records. Tchaikovsky was in excellent spirits at the time of the premiere: his career was blossoming, he enjoyed a triumph in the US only a year earlier. He was planning to return to London, where he was extremely popular. He felt especially good about the new symphony, and expressed his optimism about it to his brother, Modest:
