In October 1990, the automotive world was in for a sensation as Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new top model of the W 124 series. The five-liter V8 engine (M 119) from the 500 SL (R 129) made for mighty forward propulsion. With 326 hp and 480 Nm, the saloon followed in the footsteps of the W 109 280 SEL 6.3 and W 116 450 SEL 6.9: a saloon with the performance of a sports car.
Visually, the 500 E was recognizable as such only at second glance, its exterior distinguishing features being its subtly flared wings, fog lights integrated in the front apron and 16-inch 8-hole light-alloy wheels. This restraint was doubtless one of the success factors, with a total of 10,479 vehicles being built by the end of production in April 1995. There was also great enthusiasm over the 500 E in Zuffenhausen – probably not just because of the vehicle’s spectacular performance, but also because bodyshell production and final assembly
