“A Bunch of Flowers on the Cliff’s Edge“
by Renny Yaniar
Amelia’s house was in a quiet place. It was in a hilly village. The garden of that house was very beautiful. Flowers with various colours grew there. Amelia grew some roses. She’s a nature lover. One day Amelia closed her book. She felt tired after studying hard. She stood by the window. She could see the mountain from there. It’s beautiful bluish green.“How beautiful. How wonderful if I can reach the top of that mountain without climbing.“If you want to fly there, follow me,“ said a soft voice. Ameliawas surprised.“Who are you? Why did you come in without permission?““My name is Yuli. My home is a bit far from here. I want to be your friend, Amelia,“ said that girl.“You knew my name,“ said Amelia.“I often heard your mother calling you,“ Yuli answered. She reached out her hand to Amelia. Amelia shook Yuli’s hand.“Why is your hand so cold? Are you ill?“ ask Amelia worried.“I haven’t been to school for few days,“ said Yuli.“If you were sick, why aren’t you in bed now?“ asked Amelia.“Outdoor atmosphere will make me better, Amelia,“ said Yuli. Yuli pulled Amelia’s hand. She wanted Amelia to follow her.“Oh, no. I can not go now. I must do my homework.““Okay. How about tomorrow?“ asked Yuli.“You are welcome. My mother will make some delicious cakes for me. You must taste it, Yuli,“ said Amelia.“Thanks Amelia. You are so kind.“ Yuli waved to Amelia and then she’s gone. Amelia’s mother was puzzled to see her daughter talking alone.“Who talked to you, Amelia?“ asked her.“Oh, I talked to Yuli, my new friend,“ Amelia answered.“But I didn’t see anybody near,“ said Amelia’s mother worried.“This wasn’t my fantasy, Mom. Yuli is my real friend. Her house is a bit far from here. She’ll come again tomorrow. I had promised to give her the cake you make,“ told Amelia.“You are a little bit strange,“ mumbled Amelia’s mother. She shook her next day, the sun shone lightly. It was still seven in the morning. Amelia looked outside the window. She saw Yuli behind the fence.“Oh, you are coming. But why do you look sad?“ asked Amelia. Yuli didn’t speak. There were tears in her eyes, falling down her cheeks.“Are you crying?“ asked Amelia. Yuli nodded.“Amelia, please come with me. It’ll only take a minute. I’ll show you something. It’s beautiful but sad,“ said Yuli. Amelia felt sorry for her. She agreed to accompany Yuli.“Hold my hand,“ Yuli said. Soon they arrived in a place.“Well, look at those flowers, Amelia. Beautiful, aren’t they? I want to pick them,“ Yuli pointed at a bunch of flowers which grew on the cliff’s edge. Those were beautiful flowers indeed. But they grew in a dangerous place.“No! Yuli! Please don’t go there. It’s very dangerous!“ Amelia shouted. She tried to stop her. But Yuli had walked toward the cliff’s edge. Yuli were trying to reach for the flowers. Suddenly, the ground she stepped in cracked. Instantly Yuli fell into the bottom of the cliff. An old man heard Amelia screaming. He was cutting bushes. He came to her but she couldn’t speak a word. She only pointed at the deep cliff. The man went down the cliff very carefully. He saw Yuli lying there.“Oh, my God. I think this is the lost child. Her parents have searched for her everywhere,“ he mumbled sadly and scared. Amelia was very sad when she knew about Yuli. The man accompany her to her home. He then told Yuli’s parents that Yuli had passed away. She had fallen down the cliff. Amelia’s father remembered something. He took a paper under the table. He had read some news about the lost girl named Yuli. Actually, Yuli had been lost for a week. She had fallen down the cliff. Nobody knew about it. Amelia knew Yuli had wanted Amelia to help her, so that her body would be found.“So, it’s Yuli’s soul who came to me, Father?“ asked Amelia. Her father nodded.“That’s why her hand was so cold. But I needn’t be afraid. I will always pray for her,“ she next morning, Amelia opened the window. She was so surprised to find a bunch of flowers near outside the window. Some pink flowers. Wet with dews and so fresh. Amelia remembered, Yuli loved these flowers.“God, give Yuli the nicest place beside You, Amen,“ she whispered as tears ran down her cheeks.
