The didgeridoo (also known as a didjeridu) is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or “drone pipe“. Most Australian languages are commonly held to belong to the Pama--Nyungan family, containing perhaps 300 languages. The name “Pama--Nyungan“ is derived from the names of the two most widely separated groups, the Pama languages of the northeast and the Nyungan languages of the southwest.
