Un Dia de Noviembre Leo Brouwer, beside being a wonderful, significant composer, is perhaps the coolest guy I have ever met. I first saw him play in Toronto in the 70’s. To say it was the most moving classical guitar concert, ever, would be to underplay it. He came out in all black, no smile, a serious Cuban scary, actually and absolutely shredded the guitar, the stage, the . After the crowd took to their feet in a forever ovation, Maestro returned to the stage, no smile, thin, austere, dedicated Cuban communist, he simply looked at us and crushed his fist to his chest. Damn!! I did not see him again until 1990, at the Alirio Diaz Competition where he was a judge. I literally feared him. Half way through the 2 week event, the 2 dozen competitors/staff and Brouwer met at the Funacion Vincente Emilio Sojo for a really beautiful day together.
