When I was starting out my career as an entrepreneur and keynote speaker, I used to get so nervous talking in front of people that I wouldn’t even pause between my words. I would just speak faster and faster and faster. If you don’t pause between your words, how do you expect the audience to take anything away from what you say? By not pausing, you lose clarity, and therefore the audience won’t learn much. Pausing not only allows others time to process what you just said, it also gives you time to think about what to say next. AND it removes the umms & ahhs from your speech. So it’s a win-win!
