Hand Sewing a Cossack Bashlik in Memory of My Late Grandfather

The Cossack people present day are an ethnic minority group of the Russian Federation, and my late grandfather who passed away at the end of 2021 was a Cossack, making me (partly) Cossack. In honour of his memory and to celebrate ethnic minority historical fashion, I decided to hand sew this bashlik (or winter hood), a winter-appropriate headwear that was worn in the 1800s by the Cossack people, becoming popular all throughout Russia in the 1830s and 1840s, and later making its way to Victorian Britain and much of Western Europe. While 19th century fashion included a lot of bashlik wearing, it isn’t actually the earliest origins of this headwear, which has some fairly ancient roots. I used the pattern from Prior Attire’s latest book, The Victorian Dressmaker’s Companion, but if you would like to sew a bashlik, my friend Katja of @withmyhandsdream has her own video where she provides you with a pattern, some history, and the construction. This is an extremely easy and quick project and can be created out of linen to protect from the sun in warmer weather too: I hope you enjoy watching this video and the historical hand sewing steps required to craft this bashlik.
