Joan Baez & Marianne Faithfull Sing “As Tears Go By“ In Bob Dylan’s Hotel Room (May 1965)

Here’s a wonderful outtake from DA Pennebaker’s documentary “Don’t Look Back“. Faithfull and Baez create brief but spellbinding harmonies while Bob taps away on a draft of his first book, “Tarantula“. Beautiful as this impromptu performance is, things get awkward when it’s contextualized with Baez’s and Dylan’s turbulent relationship: Speaking about the 1965 tour, Baez commented in a Rolling Stone interview, “I just sort of trotted around, wondering why Bob wouldn’t invite me onstage, feeling very sorry for myself, getting very neurotic and not having the brains to leave and go home. That would be the best way to describe that tour. It was sort of just wasted time.” Well, maybe for you, Joan... But in my opinion, time making music like this is time well spent. I imagine one of the reasons this scene wasn’t included in the final cut was copyright complications with Decca Records, which owned the rights to the song. We’re lucky to be able to see it all these years later. Peace & Love, ~SP
