Giovanni Giacometti, Evening on the Alps, 1908

When Giacometti painted this work, he was starting to differentiate his style from the influence of other masters, like Segantini. Strong colors and contrasts remind of his early style, yet the atmosphere here is more expressive than it used to be. At the beginning of the 20th century, Giacometti and other Swiss artists contributed through their works to characterize “mountains“ as a defining feature of the Swiss identity.
