One of the most beautiful stations of the Moscow metro is Mayakovskaya. This station rightfully occupies the first lines and was awarded at the World Exhibition in New York in 1938. The station is very modern and futuristic in its decoration. At this station, you feel like you are in a cathedral. This feeling is created by a series of columns dividing the three-nave space. Columns in the underground system were built here for the first time. The reason was not aesthetic, but practical. The station was dug deep, but the bowels were not suitable for such a depth, and soon the ceiling began to crack. Therefore, the architect Dushkin designed columns that distribute the weight of the ceiling. They look elegant and fragile, but strong steel supports the weight of the ceiling well. The top of the central nave is decorated with a magnificent mosaic depicting the “Soviet sky“. Drawings for the Mayakovskaya mosaics were created by one of the main characters of socialist realism, the artist Alexander Deineka, it was named after the great poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, and the station engineer Alexei Dushkin, designing its innovative design solutions, asked his wife to play Bach and Prokofiev for him again and again - for inspiration. And this is not only one of the most beautiful stations of the Moscow metro. It was Mayakovskaya that became the center of underground life and the main bomb shelter during the Great Patriotic War: 50 thousand people could hide here! Станция очень современна и футуристична по своему убранству. На этой станции вы чувствуете себя как в соборе. Такое ощущение создаёт ряд колонн, разделяющих трехнефное пространство. Колонны в подземной системе здесь строились впервые. Причина была не эстетическая, а практическая. Станцию вырыли глубоко, но недра для такой глубины не подходили, и вскоре потолок начал трескаться. Поэтому архитектор Душкин спроектировал колонны, которые распределяют вес потолка. Они выглядят элегантно и хрупко, но прочная сталь хорошо выдерживает вес потолка. Верх центрального нефа украшен великолепной мозаикой с изображением “советского неба“. Рисунки для мозаик “Маяковской“ создал один из главных героев соцреализма художник Александр Дейнека, названа она в честь великого поэта Владимира Маяковского, а инженер станции Алексей Душкин, проектируя ее инновационные конструктивные решения, просил свою жену снова и снова играть ему Баха и Прокофьева — для вдохновения. И это не только одна из красивейших станций московского метро. Именно «Маяковская» стала центром подземной жизни и главным бомбоубежищем в годы Великой Отечественной войны: здесь могли укрыться 50 тысяч человек!
