Anti-vaccine protesters, police face off in Athens

(12 Dec 2021) Around 150 people gathered in front of the Greek Parliament in Athens’ Syntagma Square on Sunday to protest against COVID-19 vaccination and measures introduced to fight the pandemic. Demonstrators held banners with one reading “stop the lockdown“ while protesters were chanting “hands off our children.“ Some distributed fliers from the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which a court has pronounced a criminal organization, and whose leaders, including several former lawmakers, are serving lengthy prison sentences. There was a brief moment of tension when a group tried to block traffic and were pushed back by police using pepper spray. The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic in Greece rose to over 1 million on Sunday. 19,248 people have died so far according to official figures.
