Here is the GM “clamshell“ glide-away tailgate from the full-sized station-wagon line in the early through mid/1970s, and shown in action. This was designed to be accesible, even if the vehicle was towing a trailer. The window could retract into the roof alone, of both window and tailgate could be operated at once, as shown. This feature, though innovate, did add length and weight to the vehicle.
