Williamson (1931 –2003) Piano Concerto, No 2 in F sharp minor, piano and string orchestra 1960 Allegro con brio – Andante Lento – Allegro con spirito Malcolm Williamson has a son and two daughters. Peter was born on 28 September 1960. Anticipating the birth, Malcolm and Dolly had moved into a larger apartment where the weekly rent was £45. After Peter was born he was taken to their new flat in Hampstead where, just in time, Malcolm discovered a competition to compose a concerto for piano and strings offered by the Department of Music and the Choral Society of the University of Western Australia. He had just eight days to complete the score and post it to the University, winning first prize of £500. It was first performed to great acclaim by Michael Brimer with the University String Orchestra conducted by Frank Callaway. Malcolm subsequently played it on many occasions throughout the world and it became a calling card whenever the opportunity arose. He always played it from memory
