Popeye no Eigo Asobi (ポパイの英語遊び) Famicom Complete Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A beginning to end playthrough of Nintendo’s 1983 Famicom game, Popeye no Eigo Asobi (Popeye’s English Fun) from
A pretty novel game that was designed to help Japanese folk learn some basic English words. It probably could be useful for those wanting who speak English to learn some Japanese words too, though it would require a minimum of being able to read Katakana characters to work.
I can only assume that the people who made this weren’t entirely proficient in English themselves, since there are some wrong spellings in the English words, as well as some words that NOBODY needs (VITAMINE, BIATHALON? Really??)
Please note that this wasn’t playing using a dictionary, Google translate, or any other underhanded means :) I studied Japanese and was able to read it, though some of the words were a bit strange anyway (for instance, the word “ha“ shows up, which can mean “tooth“ or “teeth“ since Japanese doesn’t typically distinguish between the singular and plural. English does though, so I ended up taking a penalty on that because I tried to enter TEETH when the game wanted TOOTH instead). It also decides to become very British in one instance, calling a ladybug a ladybird.
It’s not going to replace Rosetta Stone, but it’s novel either way.
