In the beginning of the XIVe century, when the County of Flanders was under the rule of the French crown, a violent revolt broke out in Western Flanders. The film starts when leading French nobels arrive to convince the recalcitrant, old Count of Flanders to go to the French court, to beg forgiveness of King Philip the Fair. The brother of the King, the Count of Valois, personally guarantees that the old Count will be dealt with chivalrously. Over the protests of his son, Robert of Béthune (nicknamed “The Lion of Flanders“), the Count of Flanders leaves for Compiègne. There, however, he and all his nobles are arrested by the King, who is under the baneful influence of his develish wife, Jeanne of Navarre. When King Philip arrives in Bruges shortly thereafter, he is given a cold reception by the inhabitants. In addition, his wife is publicly affronted by the arrogant beauty of Machteld, the daughter of Robert de Béthune. In her anger, the Queen has the girl kidnapped
