Joe Biden says his achievements ’merited’ a second term as he addresses nation

Joe Biden said his achievements “merited” a second term in office as he addressed the nation for the first time since stepping back from the presidential race. The US president, 81, suggested his “leadership in the world” and “vision for America’s future” had given Americans reason to elect him again, but said he would “pass the torch” to a new generation to keep his party united. In a 10-minute address from the Oval Office, Mr Biden cited Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Franklin Delano Roosevelt as he sought to cement his legacy after almost four years in office. He stepped down on Sunday from his home in Delaware, where he was self-isolating with coronavirus.
