Franz Liszt - Die Loreley, (Damrau, Deutsch; Fischer-Dieskau, Barenboim)
Franz Liszt (German: [ˈlɪst]; Hungarian: Liszt Ferencz, in modern usage Liszt Ferenc [ˈlist ˈfɛrɛnt͡s];[n 1] 22 October 1811 – 31 July 1886) was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, and organist of the Romantic era. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. He was also a writer, philanthropist, Hungarian nationalist, and Franciscan tertiary.
Die Loreley is perhaps one of Liszt’s most famous lieder... It is set to poetry written by Heinrich Heine. is the song’s first version, for voice and piano. But Liszt shall always be Liszt, and thus, he also made arrangements for piano (in the Buch der Lieder I, ), mezzo-soprano or tenor voice and piano (), and even for voice and orchestra ()! Die Loreley is, perhaps, one of my favorite songs, and here, I’ve provided two interpretations: that of Diana Damrau (voice) with Helmut Deutsch (piano), and that of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (voice) with Daniel Barenboim (piano). Below are the two timestamps:
0:00 Damrau, Deutsch
6:30 Fischer-Dieskau, Barenboim
If you compare the two performances, you’ll find that the latter is a bit shorter towards the end. It turns out, it cut some bars. I don’t know why, perhaps was used. Proving that was impossible, as IMSLP has only . So, I just followed their cutting of some latter portions for my video.
