Why have there been more than 100,000 Covid deaths in the UK - the most in Europe - and among the highest in the world? The coronavirus was first detected in the city of Wuhan in China a little over a year ago in late 2019. The outbreak spread quickly across the world in the first months of 2020 and was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation on the 11th March. So why is the UK’s death toll among the worst in the world? Why is it one of the countries that has been hit by the pandemic so much harder than others?
