WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT. Brooke Axtell is a human rights activist, writer, speaker and performing artist. She was featured in a segment at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, where she gave a spoken word performance after a speech by US President Barack Obama on domestic violence and before a performance by singer Katy Perry dedicated to domestic violence victims. Axtell herself was sold for sex by her nanny when she was seven years old who also forced her into child pornography, and this experience made her more vulnerable to experiencing domestic violence later in life, she explains, a major risk factor for entering abusive relationships is sexual abuse before the age of 18. As an adult, she was involved in an abusive relationship that helped spur her toward activism.
