US says Iran’s retaliation against Israel’s Haniyeh assassination could get ‘out of control’

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Monday that it would not be “useful at all, for anyone in the region” for Iran to retaliate against Israel for their assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. While being asked about Iran’s right to defend itself during a press briefing on Monday, he said Iran’s retaliation would risk the situation potentially getting “out of control”. Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of Hamas, was assassinated on Wednesday by a projectile fired at his room in the guesthouse he was staying according to eyewitnesses that spoke with Middle East Eye.
