Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia faced off with John Pope’s Army of Virginia at the Second Battle of Manassas. On August 28, 1862, Rufus King’s Division encountered Thomas “Stonewall“ Jackson’s Second Corps and that would begin the Second Battle of Bull Run. It would rage for two more days as Longstreet’s Corps tried to link up with Jackson and Pope attempted to defeat Jackson before that junction could be made. Early on August 29, 1862, the Union Army of Virginia attempted to locate Stonewall Jackson’s Corps. Major General Franz Sigel’s Corps, along with divisions of other corps, would scour the woods north of Groveton to find the rebel commander. As the Union probed Jackson’s lines, the Confederates fought off numerous attacks waiting for reinforcements under James Longstreet to arrive. Stonewall Jackson grew concerned about Longstreet’s Wing of the Army of Northern Virginia and whether it would reach him in time to fend off the attacks leveled at Jackson’s defensive line by General John Pope. On August 29, 1862, Pope sends repeated attacks against Jackson, but fails to dislodge him, although many times he came close. On the third day at the Second Battle of Manassas, Jackson must withstand another major attack by General Pope’s Army of Virginia. General Longstreet will move his wing against Pope and crush him on part of the First Bull Run battlefield. #CivilWar #StonewallJackson #SecondBullRun #BattlefieldTrust #History #HaveHistoryWillTravel #HistoryChannel #Historynerd #Historygeek #HistoryCritique #historymemes #historyofart #historyinthemaking #historybuff #historylover #historylesson #historyfacts #historyinpictures #historymaker #historylovers #historyteacher #historymakers #historymeme #historytour #historymade #historytv18 #historymuseum
