Demonstration on multiple technique - 盲僧琵琶(Moso biwa)
A 5-fretted moso biwa was played in this 1999 record, of a performer I chanced into back then(Not the one in thumbnail tho, I did not take any photo)
In the audio he demonstrated many(not all) technique, mostly focusing on how to use your biwa plektrum/pluck to create different effects. I’m leaving time stamp so you could skip from one to the others.
0:00 playing improvised lines
0:21 one to one skip: the first string as the melody string, then choose one from rest of the 3 strings and make it as droning string. Proceed to pluck on the two strings alternately.
0:51 one to all skip: the first string as melody string, but this time you alternately play the whole rest of three strings to create a stronger droning effect.
1:16 Sweep: Playing all four strings downstroke, rapidly, usually only focusing on 1st string when desire to alter the melody.
1:29 One skip sweep: Choose one string as your bass droning string(Usually the 4th or 3rd string), alter between that particular string and sweeping. Presume one bar has four notes, it’s always recommend to hit the first note on droning string, the rest three beats should proceed to sweep anyway.
1:42 Tremolo
1:51 Tremolo sweep: Tremolo on all four strings to create a stronger effect than regular one string tremolo.
