Elena Firsova - Hymn to Spring (1993)

All her pieces are beautiful, expressive and formally balanced. Although I have worked all of them in my class, “Hymn to Spring” has always been my favorite. It is a piece of virtuosity, but without extreme difficulties. Consonant chords provide harmonic support to what sound like singing birds. The reference to Messiaen seems clear. But I have to confess that not being able to find a satisfactory feeling with Messiaen’s birds on the piano, I find here one of my favorite pieces of the repertoire. There will be more pieces to come by Elena Firsova, one of the most important Russian composers of the moment and someone with whom I feel a great musical connection.
