To Console, To Raise, to Give Hope - The Vocation of the Catholic Physician Today

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Dominic Vachon and featuring panelists Jeanne Farnan (ND ‘17), Kate Callaghan (ND ‘12), Mike Hawking (ND ‘09), and Dr. Tom McGovern. Rooted in an understanding of the human person as imago dei – of being made in the image and likeness of God – the Catholic understanding of health and wellness is informed by certain physical and metaphysical truths. Panelists addressed the following questions for the Catholic in and/or interested in pursuing a professional career in medicine today: – What do current medical students, residents, and practicing physicians wish they had known about the formation process and day-to-day practice of medicine? – How do medical students and physicians sustain their enthusiasm when faced with the grind of medical school, residency, and the “big business” of medicine? – How can physicians navigate challenging bioethical and conscience issues when practicing medicine in settings with competing conceptions of care?
