Burger/Ink-Twelve Miles High (1996 ambient/techno)
I’ve gone back into the vaults to dust off a record that I bought sometime in 1998, well within my very first year of vinyl shopping. Pretty sure this was a bargain bin find but regardless, I came across a nice abstract techno 3-tracker here. I don’t know too much about Burger/Ink other than the fact that they were a duo of producers from Germany who released a single 10-track CD in 1996, then split to release music on other side projects later on that decade. They had a pretty good label connection in the sense that they were co-signed on Matador and Harvest to release the CD. 6 of the 10 tracks were released as separate 12“ singles, one of which Twelve Miles High comes from. This is a great chill-out track; it’s based around a fairly stiff break and synth loop but there are plenty of loosely arranged subtleties and supporting pads that allows the song to remain fairly aloof and abstract. Everything is drenched in reverb and has a certain surrealism to it that is not unlike many of Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound’s releases from that era. Really glad I’ve managed to hold on to this extremely obscure record well beyond a decade after it first came into my possession.
