Although Japan reportedly has the world’s third largest geothermal resources with more than 100 active volcanoes, only 0.3 per cent of electricity is produced from geothermal across the nation. A hot spring town in the northeastern Japanese prefecture of Fukushima is exploring a way to have its onsen industry coexist with a geothermal plant.
