Franz Völker - Meistersinger - Preislied (Morgenlich leuchtend)

1928 recording. My favorite Wagnerian tenor sings the famous Prize Song from Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The term ’heldentenor’ is commonly misinterpreted. It literally means ’heroic tenor’. One does not have to posses an enormous dramatic voice to sound heroic. A heldentenor can be a dramatic voice (Melchior, Lorenz) but it can also be a beautiful lyrical voice (Volker, Konya). The lyrical heldentenor is commonly referred to as a ’jugendlicher heldentenor’ or ’baby heldentenor’, Italian equivalent being lyrico spinto or perhaps spinto.
