LIVE: World Court verdict on Israel / Gaza genocide case

12:00 (UK Time) - Hearing begins The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to rule at lunchtime on emergency measures against Israel, after a legal challenge by South Africa alleging that the military action in Gaza is genocide. A panel of 17 judges at the court in The Hague, including an Israeli Holocaust survivor, will make a legally binding ruling on Friday, potentially demanding a ceasefire under a United Nations genocide convention to which Israel is a party. The decision will be closely watched and comes one day before the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day, in memory of the six million Jews murdered by Germany during the Second World War. South Africa has brought Israel before the court, claiming that it has breached the UN’s Genocide Convention, signed in 1948 in response to the Holocaust and in the same year the Israeli state was created.
