“Human tragedy is huge,” says Toronto doctor performing eye surgery, facial reconstruction in Gaza
A medical delegation from Rahma Worldwide, a non-profit aid organization, has been working through the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza to complete complex surgeries on wounded Palestinians.
Toronto ophthalmologist Yasser Khan is part of the medical team in Khan Younis and says the “human tragedy is huge.“
“People are losing their legs, their eyes, their lives,” Khan said, adding, “the people of the health care workers are working 24 hours every single day with nothing, with no resources, nothing. With no medications.”
Khan said the only thing keeping him going as he conducts eye and facial reconstruction surgeries in Khan Younis is the calmness of his fellow health care workers and the people of Gaza.
The number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since Oct. 7 surpassed 22,000 earlier this week and continues to rise as Israel’s siege rages on.
