Chinese university shows off robot guide dog

Robot dogs, contrary to popular opinion, aren’t just used for gun-toting evil. They can also be used for good, as demonstrated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. A team at the university has unveiled a 6-legged guidebot, intended to help visually impaired people just like a real guide dog. The robot (who hasn’t been given a name, so we’ll call him Jim) can identify and avoid obstacles, navigate stairs, and respond to human voice commands within a second. Jim can also identify traffic lights, unlike real dogs, who are colorblind. According to the team, Jim will be set for a trial run as early as November, and, if successful, will help to drastically cut the waiting times for guide dogs.
