Shiveluch Volcano Update; The Lava Dome is Gone, New 1,000 Meter Wide Crater
The powerful explosive eruption of the Shiveluch volcano has left behind a more than 3,000 foot or approximately 1,000 meter wide hole in the ground. This explosion crater might be as much as 200 meters deep, and almost completely obliterated the preexisting 2,000 foot tall lava dome which had been growing intermittently since 1964. This eruption might have involved a lateral blast and sent pyroclastic flows to distances of up to 19 kilometers.
