The film shows various images of America’s highways and byways, with narration that discusses driving conditions and safety. At 1:30, a motorcycle policeman is seen on the job, writing tickets and helping motorists after accidents. At 2:10, an accident is seen and an analysis made of what happened. At 3:20, stopping distance is discussed. At 4:30, a policeman is sen issuing a ticket to someone whose brakes are not functioning correctly. At 5:00, an accident occurs when a car has to brake suddenly to avoid a train, and the car skids off the track. At 5:10, the Indianapolis 500 auto race is seen (note the famed “Pagoda“ in the shots) and then highway driving at 50 mph is seen -- for a total of 100 mph with traffic coming in the other direction. In an era when passing lanes were fairly rare, head-on accidents were not uncommon. At 7:24, a slow car driven by a “hog“ is seen (wonderful special costume here!) At 8:30, car manufacturing is seen with a focus on safety. At 8:41, stunts are seen, probably by “hell driver“ Joie Chitwood, who drove Plymouth cars as part of his famed stunt show. The film ends with this wonderful quote: “The most important part of any car is the nut that holds the steering wheel“.
