Magda Olivero sang the role of Cio-cio-san in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly 64 times, mostly in Italy, Torino 1937, Napoli 1938-1961, Roma 1955 and Paris 1958. The last time she performed the opera on stage was in 1962. The excerpts presented here are from two concerts given in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1968. The sound has been remastered from the original stereo master-tapes; the photos used for the video-montage are from different productions of Madama Butterfly and span over 25 years. Of all the Puccini heroines, Cio-Cio-san was probably the role Magda Olivero had the deepest affinity. With a legendary and unfailing technique, her voice could express all the lyricism and drama required to do justice and bring to life the romantic and ill-fated young geisha.
