The Titans Sphere from 1999 Could Be Your Next PS4 and Xbox One Controller (vid#68)
In today’s presentation I am introducing you to a unique PC gaming controller from 1999 that some thought might bring 3D gaming to the next level. It unfortunately didn’t do that, but it is nonetheless a very interesting controller that also happens to be extremely rare. It is the Titans Sphere, and I have managed to get it working on my PS4 and Xbox One game systems via a couple adapters, a mini-USB cable, and my laptop running Cronus Pro software with an X-Aim plugin activated.
The adapters/devices needed to get this working are:
1) Rockfire 15 pin PC gameport to USB controller adapter
2) CronusMax Plus (or Cronus Zen)
3) PC laptop (with Cronus Pro Software if you’re using a CronusMax Plus).
Here are some pivotal steps you’ll need to take to get this working (this applies to those who are using the CronusMax Plus controller adapter):
1) Before plugging anything into your PS4, you’ll need to “disconnect“ your wireless Dual Shock 4 from the PS4. Go to Settings and then Devices and then Bluetooth controllers. Select Dual Shock 4 and click Disconnect.
2) Plug in your CronusMax Plus to the PS4 and connect the Dual Shock 4 controller via its cable.
3) Go to Settings and then Devices and then Bluetooth controllers. Press the Options button on the controller and then click “Forget Device.“
4) Go to your PS4 game and use your Dual Shock 4 controller to get into whatever game you want to play. Go to a screen in the game that precedes the actual gameplay, but don’t start the gameplay yet. You’ll ultimately want to use the Titans Sphere to press X to get into the gameplay in a couple more minutes...
5) Turn on your laptop and connect the Titans Sphere to it via the Rockfire 15 pin gameport to USB adapter.
6) Go to the Control Panel and find where your computer has the USB game controller window (my computer has it under Printers and Devices), and calibrate the Titans Sphere.
7) Open up your Cronus Pro software and plug a mini-USB cable to your laptop (having its one end connected to the program port of your CronusMax Plus that is still connected to the USB port of your PS4.
8) Read the Quickstart Guide of your CronusMax Plus Online Manual to figure out how to assign the CronusMax Plus to have Playstation 4 controller input and Playstation 4 console output, and accomplish it with getting into its menus and making the proper selections.
9) Read the Quickstart Guide of the Manual to understand how the X-Aim Plug-In works with the Cronus Pro software to get the Titans Sphere recognized as your controller (you’ll have to run the plug-in as a system administrator). Once you’ve got the X-Aim Plug-In window open and you’ve selected PS4 controller, you’ll see that you can set up button assignments for a Dual Shock 4. Right-click for a drop-down of options available on the button or thumbstick action you intend on making assignments for. You can click on “Capture button press“ and then click the appropriate button on the Titans Sphere. Do this for any button that your game will use.
10) Assign left on the thumbstick to represent a full counterclockwise turning of the Titans Sphere handles (counterclockwise turning of the left handle while also simultaneously twisting the right handle clockwise), and then assign right on the thumbstick to represent a full clockwise turning of the Titans Sphere handles (clockwise turning of the left handle while also simultaneously twisting the right handle counterclockwise). Make sure to not accidentally press a button on the handle when doing these assignments of twist motion. If you make an error, start the process over again.
11) Test your controller and then begin playing the game (press X to start the gameplay).
12) When wanting to get the Dual Shock 4 controller back into action, just close out the X-Aim plug-in window and the Dual Shock 4 can now be used again.
As always, Thanks to Emforay for the theme song to Wired-Up Retro. Check him out on Soundcloud:
I also am grateful to DJ Kestutis for inclusion of his song, “Reborn“ as the outro. (license )
