SpaceX is making history with the Starship program, which is opening doors for humanity to become a multi-planetary species. Future generations will reflect upon this moment as a significant milestone in expanding our collective consciousness. It is crucial to focus on designing not just for the destination, but also for the voyage. Within the walls of Starship, unprecedented memories will be forged, providing experiences that no humans have ever encountered before. The vision for Starship 2035 goes beyond being a mode of transportation to another planet. It aspires to serve as the catalyst for humanity’s first experiential transition into a space-faring civilization.
Contrary to the utilitarian environments of the ISS or spaceship interiors portrayed in popular entertainment, Starship 2035 takes a human-centered approach by incorporating elements of our beautiful home as we embark on a journey far far away. To achieve this effectively, the interior environment aims to strike a harmonious balance between diverse immersive environments and efficient manufacturing and assembly processes. The meticulous organization of the seven floors and numerous sub-spaces take into account a range of considerations, including EDL safety, task performance, duration of occupation, shielding against cosmic radiation, and the promotion of experiential diversity.

00:00 INTRODUCTION
Assumptions:
Mars Crew-2 mission supporting 14 personnel
Mars Starship interior version 2
Supplies for Mars activity delivered prior
Supports 0G and activity
Habitable area: Height x Diameter
Water storage between floors
Radiation shielding on Rest and Work floors
00:24 FLIGHT
The flight deck accommodates all 14 personnel during takeoff, entry, descent, and landing. Seats are modeled after Crew Dragon and designed to tilt backward during atmospheric maneuvers. The HUD, initially embedded in the ceiling, descends during pre-flight preparations and actual flight. Considering that the flight deck will only be fully occupied for four days out of two years, the ceiling height is set at , allowing for more spacious floors below.
00:50 GATHER
This space serves as the central hub, where crew members come together to eat, share, marvel and laugh. It is designed to be flexible and adaptable, catering to the diverse needs of the crew at both 0G and . Tables descend from the ceiling for collaboration, while an open area, large window, and display encourages gathering and play for the long journey. Small secluded nooks representing Earth and Mars are built for privacy while remaining connected to the larger social space. Don’t forget the introverts.
01:40 MAINTAIN
Ensuring robust physical health is crucial for maintaining productivity on Mars. Work out in semi-private for two hours a day in the best seats in the house. In the event of a medical emergency or if a crew member falls ill, Starship is equipped with a medical bay. This space serves as a quarantine area, fully stocked with essential supplies and access to a dedicated bathroom.
02:16 WORK
This floor is where the crew will spend most of their time. The area is divided between scientific instruments and workspace. The instrument wall is built to be modular, allowing institutions to conduct research from Earth, similar to the ISS. Workstations are partitioned via Velcro walls allowing for privacy and promoting productivity. Although designed like a workshop, foot handles are commonly placed to support 0G work.
02:44 REST
In Starship, cabins are most protected from cosmic radiation. With the floor divided into 14 sections, each cabin offers a floor space of only ²/30ft². With limited space, it is crucial to maximize every inch for crew comfort and enjoyment. Each cabin is equipped with a storage space enough to fit clothing and personal items. In , users sit on the floor, thus increasing usable space, inspired by Japanese tradition. However, in 0G, the cabin is inverted to optimize for a relaxed floating position as the bedframe is now used as a standing desk.
03:23 STORE
Storage floor is inspired by mobile shelving built on sliding tracks. Space is maximized to store as much supplies as possible.
3:40 EXIT
The space is primarily designed for use in , with the exception of system maintenance and resource checks. Its main purpose is to establish a secure barrier between the Starship and Mars environments. This is accomplished through two clean rooms, six EMU suits, and one sample transfer box. Direct access to the shaft is available during Starship construction. The exit area is equipped with a telescoping gantry and personnel lift for entry and exit. It also includes an air and vacuum station for dust removal. Oxygen and hydrogen tanks are arranged radially to ensure even weight distribution.
