IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE Jackson Design Berlin March-July 2012 Curated by Ilke Penzlien. Armchair, Cantilever Chair, Fold Up Chair, Curule Chair, Folding Chair, Rocking Chair, Swivel Chair. No piece of furniture comes in such diverse forms as the chair. Jacksons’ exhibition “In Order of Appearance” features important design classics, technical innovations, unique pieces, prototypes, and rare examples that help shed light on the evolution of 20th-century chair design. Chairs were individually manufactured by carpenters until the middle of the 19th-century when the emergence of new technologies and materials of the industrial era allowed for mass production. Since then, from the Avant-garde till today, almost every renowned architect or designer has been involved with the development of chair design. The exhibition plays with tensions of oppositions by using groups or pairings of innovative forms from Scandinavian and International 20th-century furniture design. The
