Indian police use batons, forced-exercise to impose COVID-19 lockdown

Indian police officers were seen on motorbikes, hitting people breaching lockdown rules with batons, in the city of Mandsaur on Saturday as the country continues to struggle to contain its deadly second wave of COVID-19 cases. Police officers were also seen ordering people to do exercises such as squats and frog hops. The main roads in the cities of Amritsar, Srinagar and Chennai were closed off as police carried out checks on vehicles. Only essential service providers were allowed to travel. India’s number of cases surged by 349,691 on Sunday. Hospitals in Delhi and across the country have been turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds.
