SATC | Season 6 | Episode 9 | Carrie’s Shoe Revenge
In this clip: Tatum O’ Neal (1:32), Sarah Jessica Parker; Patrick O’Sullivan and Kelly O’Sullivan.
About this clip: Kyra and the cigaresque Chuck with their boisterous children Mylo and Allegra, excelling the Cobbs’ in annoyance can be rated as the most laidback, irresponsible and trying people on Sex and The City. Unembarrassed by her imps of mischief who create a ruckus even at Manolo Blahnik, Kyra eventually learns a lesson when she is shoe-shamed in return by Carrie who marries herself, registering herself at Manolo Blahnik. Carrie’s revenge is indeed the epithetical: “One giant step for me. One single step for all womankind“.
Finally, it is Kyra and her two infants who are shoe-shamed for creating hysteria and commotion at both public and private places. Perhaps, Kyra’s happy “married“ life as surfaces in her second encounter with Carrie where she reveals that now she is living a real life, negotating money over Manolos, not unlike Laney Berlin’s coming too strongly on her city-friends, is a big hoax.
SATC-Feminism 101: Contrasting Carrie against the family-woman Kyra, this scene evokes the same concerns as the pro-choice feminist debate between Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York who supposedly “chooses [her] choice“. This is one of the few moments in the season when Carrie dons the gutsy flaneuse role each time she wins against the exigencies of the time, strutting on the streets in Manolos. To quote Betty Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique“:
If I am right, the problem that has no name stirring in the minds of so many American women today is not a matter of loss of femininity or too much education, or the demands of domesticity. It is far more important than anyone recognizes. It is the key to these other new and old problems which have been torturing women and their husbands and children, and puzzling their doctors and educators for years. It may well be the key to our future as a nation and a culture. We can no longer ignore that voice within women that says: “I want something more than my husband and my children and my home.“
Maybe Kyra wanted it (read: Manolos) too, but she doesn’t have the kind of choices that Charlotte has and Carrie manages. Carrie’s zietgeisty, vogue-geisty strutting proves shoe-shamers wrong.
