What Challenges the IDF Has Faced Since the Ground Operation in the Gaza Strip Began

️🇮🇱🇸🇦 ️ What Challenges the IDF Has Faced Since the Ground Operation in the Gaza Strip Began ️ A Military Chronicles Analysis As the Israeli Ground Forces move deeper into neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip, problems are being uncovered that the IDF does not appear to have been prepared to deal with initially. How is Israel’s Ground Operation progressing? ▪️ Overall, the tempo of the IDF’s combat operation inside neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip remains slow. As we reported earlier, the focus is definitely on saving soldiers’ lives, but at the same time there are difficulties both at the tactical level of troop management and at the operational level in planning further actions. ▪️ The strategic intent of the operation remains the same: in the first phase of the ground operation, the IDF seeks to cut off northern Gaza - Jabaliya, Zeitoun, al-Shati, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya - from the southern part of the enclave. However, as the plan unfolds, peculiarities are emerging that could prevent the operation from being carried out with minimal casualties. Which? ▪️ The IDF claims that Israeli forces have cut off Gaza City and the northern neighbourhoods from the southern neighbourhoods, but a sweep of the inner-city areas seems unlikely at this point. This is primarily affected by IDF armour tactics - Israeli troops use Merkava Mk.4 tanks and Namer APCs in separation from infantry. This allows the Palestinians to hit the vehicles with RPGs and homemade bombs. This has resulted in the IDF losing between 30 and 45 pieces of heavy equipment in less than a month of fighting, which has never happened before in recent history. ▪️ The IDF infantry tactics remain unchanged and are gradually causing more casualties. Ground troops do not advance without the cover of armoured vehicles, but the vehicles cannot operate in isolation from the infantry either, as they immediately come under fire from Palestinians with RPGs. As they move deeper into neighbourhoods, the situation worsens. While the defeat of Israeli vehicles on the Al-Rashid coastal road can still be attributed to inexperienced crews and the lack of situational awareness systems, in dense urban areas, tank and APC crews cannot see more than 50-100 metres into the terrain. This gives Hamas an advantage and allows it to hit armoured vehicles at close range - 20-50m. What Conclusions can be drawn? ▪️ First, there is no alternative to the IDF’s advance inside urban neighbourhoods. Air strikes are not having the desired effect. ▪️ Secondly, the current number of Israeli troops may not be sufficient to clear all the urban neighbourhoods, as the full implementation of all tasks may require several hundred units of heavy equipment at once, and the advance according to the previously announced plans may require several thousand tanks and APCs. The accumulation of so much equipment in narrow city streets could lead to even greater casualties than now, after which the IDF generals and the country’s political leadership could find themselves at a fork in the road between two decisions of equal gravity: either to curtail the operation in the urban neighbourhoods or to continue (and possibly expand it) with disregard for casualties.
