Hunter x Hunter 1999 vs 2011 Comparison - Kurapika’s Bidding War

WATCH IN 4K! Even though 4k surpasses the resolution of both series by far, upscaling takes advantage of Youtube’s encode quality at higher resolutions (this is important for grain retention on the 99 version). Just uploading a comparison of one of my favorite scenes from the 1999 HxH anime compared to the 2011 version. If you still haven’t watched HxH I highly recommend the old one up until the York New arc is completed, then switch to the newer one starting with Greed Island. The old version has much better atmosphere, grittiness, and 90s cel/film based animation technique that the newer version never captured quite right. In this video I only have the audio and subs from the 99 version playing. In the 2011 version, this scene has happy and triumphant music playing that doesn’t match the tone of the scene. Also, the animation at 1:35 with Kurapika’s bloodshot eyes, drenched head, and shadow slowly receding over his face, is completely lost in the new version. The old version is filled with a lot of little things like that. Lots of great artistic expression and a fantastic time capsule of analog animation techniques.
