FIRST FLIGHT IN 8 YEARS! - Hawaii Mars Startup, Taxi & Test Flight on Sproat Lake
On August 1, the Hawaii Mars lifted off Sproat Lake under its own power for the first time in approximately 8 years. The last time the Hawaii Mars flew was when it appeared at Oshkosh back in 2016. Since its last flights, the Hawaii Mars was sitting unused for several years, but in the past few months, work has been done to prepare C-FLYL for its final flight to Patricia Bay seaplane base at Victoria Airport, where it will be acquired by the BC Aviation Museum and eventually put on display.
Just seven Martin Mars aircraft were built, and only two remain, with the Hawaii Mars being the only aircraft currently in flying condition. These aircraft remain an icon to many people in British Columbia, as they served as flying tankers for many years. C-FLYL in particular is also the only Mars still painted in its Coulson flying tanker livery.
Enjoy the sound of 10,000 horsepower as this nearly 80-year-old aircraft takes to the skies once again!
