Mausolus ruled Caria from 377 to 353 BC, and upon his death, his wife Artemisia commissioned the mausoleum to honor him. The structure was erected in the city of Halicarnassus, now modern-day Bodrum in Turkey. The design of the Mausoleum is attributed to the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius, and it combined Greek, Egyptian, and Lycian architectural elements, showcasing the cross-cultural influences of the time.
