Footage of 4 Planets Orbiting HR 8799 (12-Year Time Lapse)

An updated time-lapse of the previous 7-year time lapse! HR 8799 harbors four super-Jupiters orbiting with periods that range from decades to centuries. We have been monitoring this system using the Keck Observatory on Maunakea. This movie was made using real images taken from the telescope. Motion interpolation was used on 10 images of HR 8799 taken from over 12 years to create this movie. Data from this movie was published in this scientific article: I made more of these! Check them out here: Credits: Video making & motion interpolation: Jason Wang (UC Berkeley) Data analysis: William Thompson (UVic) & Christian Marois (NRC Herzberg) Orbit determination: Quinn Konopacky (UCSD) Data Taking: Bruce Macintosh (Stanford), Travis Barman (University of Arizona), Ben Zuckerman (UCLA) Data from the W. M. Keck Observatory We wish to recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence that the summit of Maunakea has always had within the indigenous Hawaiian community. We are most fortunate to have the opportunity to conduct observations from this mountain.
