Ken je mij

Ken je mij, by Trijntje Oosterhuis accompanied by guitarist Leonardo Amuedo. This live recording at De Rode HOed is one of my favourits. I love the voice of Trijntje and Leonardo is a true wonder in the way he walks trough his chords. This melody was written on a poem of Trijntje’s father Huub, who is a renowned poet from Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. His poem is full of ambiguity and sometimes one can’t even tell if a line is question or a statement. There ’s a lot of play with Dutch words and meaning and so, it’s impossible to be translate in a way that does justice to the original. I tried it anyway and produced a pretty much literal translation, sometimes choosing words that are different from the Dutch original, but (to my opinion) needed a twist in English. Don’t worry if it doesn’t make much sense right away, because the same thing applies to the Dutch version. I hope to be have contributed a little to the spread of this fantastic song.
