KU Quick Tips - Uke waza: Path to Contact

In this KU Quick Tip I look at a few of our techniques for receiving impact, or blocks, in two stages: interception and redirection. Or more simply, the path to contact, and the path after contact. We want to take the shortest path to interception, but I often see these blocking movements follow large and awkward paths. Here, I will look at minimizing the extraneous movements that often accompany these techniques. Cody Stewart is a martial arts instructor of Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu under Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. KU is a style of karate that utilizes impacting, clinch, throws, chokes, joint locks, and groundwork within a traditional Japanese budo framework. Emphasis is on civil self defense against habitual acts of physical violence (HAPV) and how all of the defensive themes are embodied in kata movements.
