Wild elephant causes alarm in southwestern China

A male Asian elephant separated from its herd walked along the highway toward Meng’a town in Yunnan Province. After more than 30 minutes, the elephant was led to safety with the help of local police and firefighters. No injuries or property damage by the elephant in the area has been reported. However, the same elephant has visited nearby villages and destroyed nine vehicles, locals say. The Asian elephant is a first-class protected wild animal in China and is found only in Dai autonomous prefecture of Xishuangbanna and Pu’er city in China. Rising incidents of human-elephant conflict that generate personal injuries and property losses have become a concern among foreign and domestic experts.
