Broken Bike Blues

In 2013, David Lawrence went out for a bike ride and was nearly killed when an oak tree came crashing down on top of him. He spent a month in the hospital but made a stunning recovery, motivated by the dream of riding again. Seven years later, at the age of 65, David embarks on his first-ever bikepacking trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with his son Brady, a cyclist and filmmaker. While riding Appalachian singletrack and camping among the rhododendron, David reflects on what it means to get a second chance at life. In 2015, he and three friends rode 8,000 miles from Key West, Florida, to Deadhorse, Alaska, and he’s been hooked on bike travel since. He’s directed films about the Silk Road and Atlas Mountain Races, but he prefers a trip with ample time to jump in lakes and stop at as many corner stores as possible.
