De Arend: Geordie Boy Goes Dutch

De Arend (the Eagle) worked the first train in the Netherlands in September 1839. Built for the broad gauge “Holland Iron Railway“ by R B Longridge, she worked the inaugural train of the Dutch railway network in September 1839. Although scrapped in 1857, a full size working replica was constructed in 1939.
