The southwestern region of Kyushu in Japan was literally submerged due to torrential downpours, as a result of which more than 587 thousand people received orders to evacuate.
According to the NHK TV channel, the evacuation has been announced in the cities of Kurume, Yame (Fukuoka Prefecture), Kumamoto, Oguni, Mifune, Koshi, Kikuyo (Kumamoto Prefecture), Takachiho (Miyazaki Prefecture), Hita, Kusu (Oita Prefecture).
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s five-level warning scale, the current level is level four, which means the need to evacuate residents of dangerous areas. The agency also warned of possible landslides in Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Yamaguchi prefectures.
Kumamoto prefectural officials said the Shirakawa and Mifune rivers were well above flood levels. Moreover, heavy rain caused the collapse of a 37-meter concrete bridge over a small river in Yamato City (Kumamoto Prefecture). At the moment, there have been no reports of casualties.
