Longtime Minnelli collaborators composer John Kander & lyricist Fred Ebb (Liza With a Z, Cabaret, New York, New York) wrote this number for Minnelli’s character, nightclub chanteuse Claire Dobie to perform at the seedy Club Americano in Tijuana, Mexico. A comedy adventure set in the 1930s, “Lucky Lady“ was directed by Stanley Donen and written by Gloria Katz & Willard Huyck. Cinematography by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Unsworth (Cabaret, 2001: A Space Oddysey, Tess). Starring Burt Reynolds, Gene Hackman, & Robbie Benson. The level of expectation for this film upon release (Christmas 1975) was off the chart. None of them were met. But I have a soft spot in my heart (or head) for this movie.
